Characters In Jekyll And Hyde English Literature Essay This essay will examine the role of the minor characters in the novel Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde. It will mainly focus on Lanyon, Enfield, Carew, and Poole and how does Uttersons connection to each of these men serve to advance the plot. Hastie Lanyon was a healthy doctor, who then became a letter writer. Richard Enfield was Uttersons cousin and a companion for strolling. Sir Danvers Carew was a member of parliament and client of Mr.Utterson. Poole was a butler at Jekylls house and he kept an eye on the activities done at Jekylls house. Each of these characters help to unpack the case of Mr.Hyde. The novel began with Richard Enfield and Utterson. They both went for a walk and Enfield tells about Hyde. He says that he saw a little man trampling a young girl. Her family was also there and soon the crowd surrounded her. Due to the crowd, the little man got frightened so he asked the family to follow him. He took them to his house and he gave them a cheque of 100 pound. After telling the story, Utterson asked the name of the man but Enfield hesitated to tell but later on, he declared that it was Mr.Hyde. Utterson had always thought that Mr.Hyde was with Jekyll for benefit but the story which Enfield recited, made him stressed about Hydes crime. Utterson became curious about Hyde. He started to look for him and he spotted him near his house. After Utterson saw Hyde, he went to Jekylls house but Jekyll was not there. Instead Utterson talked to Poole and he questions him about Hyde and Poole said O dear no,sir. He never dines here, Indeed,we saw very little of him on this side of th e house; he mostly comes and goes by the laboratory  [1]  . He also said that Hyde has the key to the lab and Jekyll has given the order to his servants to follow Hydes instructions. This made Utterson think that Jekyll was blackmailed by Hyde. At this point , Hydes case was a unsolved mystery and solving it became Uttersons aim. After one year, the news of murder was spread all over London. Sir Danvers Carew was killed by Hyde with a walking cane. The police found a letter near Carew. The letter had the name and address of Utterson. Police informed Utterson and he arrived. He recognized the body and later Utterson came to know that Hyde killed Carew. He took the police to Hydes house but Hyde was not there but still they entered and start searching for evidence. They noticed a half-burned checkbook and the other half of the walking stick. Uttersson recalled that it was the same walking cane,which he gave to Jekyll. The suspicion starts to grow even more as they do not find any picture of him and even the servants said that they saw him twice. Utterson assumed that Jekyll was hiding Hyde. After some time, Lanyon and Utterson met. Utterson wanted to discuss about Jekyll but Lanyon refused. Due to the gaps growing between Lanyon and Jekyll , Utterson wrote a letter to Jekyll to complain about what is happening between him and Lanyon. Week after that, Lanyon died but he left an envelope. Utterson opened the envelope but inside it, he gets another envelope stating not to be opened till the death or disappearance of Dr. Henry Jekyll  [2]  . The two deaths had been a shock for Utterson but he also started connecting Hyde with Jekyll. Whenever Hyde did anything wrong, he talked to Jekyll. At this stage, he had found an envelope that soon revealed the reality. Some time later, Poole came up to Uttersons house and said that he felt that there had been a disgusting game played at his home. Utterson got surprised. Then Poole asked Utterson to follow him and they went to Jekylls house. Poole took Utterson near Jekylls laboratory door and requested Jekyll to open the door for Utterson for but he refused. Poole told Utterson: I have been sent flying to all the wholesale chemists in town. Every time I brought the stuff back, there would be another paper telling me in return, because it was not pure, and another order to a different firm .This drug is wanted bitter bad,sir,whatever for.  [3]   Poole showed the notes that he has been receiving from Jekyll. The notes had addressed the needs of Jekyll. Then he kept disclosing his experiences with the noises in the laboratory. Poole told that he heard someone weeping. Utterson demanded Jekyll to open the door but he heard a voice saying Utterson for Gods sake,have some mercy  [4]  . Utterson identified the voice and insisted Poole to breakdown the door. After breaking down the door, they entered and found out dead body of Hyde. Utterson thought that Jekyll might have fled. He looked around the lab and he saw a religious book, a glass, the drug (that Poole used to bring) and papers with a brief note mentioning to read the papers after reading Lanyons letter. His letter revealed the fact of Jekyll. Lanyon wrote that Jekyll asked him to bring vials and powders to his house and to let the visitor to come along with him. Lanyon mixed powders in the vials and it turned into a portion, which the visitor drank. Soon after drinking the portion, the visitor turned into Jekyll. Lanyons letter let us to know about Jekyll being Hyde. Then, Jekylls letter is read. He says that trampling the girl and the murder, was done by his evil side, Hyde. Carew had a high position in the society so when Hyde killed him, he felt powerful. Jekyll also mentioned that he needed help with the portions because slowly he was turning into Mr.Hyde permanently. He took Lanyons help to get the portion and he confessed front of Lanyon that he was Mr.Hyde. Soon Lanyon died so he had to take Pooles help. However, the experiment was not a big success because it led to his death. This essay has demonstrated how each minor character advanced the plot and it has examined the role of them. First Enfield told the story about the girl that was trampled, and that made Utterson to carry on the investigation of Hyde. Then Sir Danvers Carew and Lanyon died. When Carew died, Utterson went to Hydes house and found materials that make him believe that Jekyll was hiding Hyde. When Lanyon died, he left a letter. At the end, Poole took Utterson to the laboratory and there he discovered the papers. When the papers and letter were revealed , truth came out. Whatever the wrong things he did, were done by his evil side. The mystery of his dark side was exposed by Utterson, the minor characters and at the end by his papers, in which he wrote about his motives and experiences.

Social Science Approach to the Study of Political Economy in Post-1949 China In order to understand the political economy of China in post 1949, The Great Leap Forward, this essay will discuss three key points.   It will start with examining the theories and concepts.   Then it will evaluate the literature and online resources from Western and Chinese (translated) sources.   And lastly, it will look at the problems of research methodology. Theories and Concepts Theories and concepts about the political economy of China after the 1949 revolution revolve around who will take control of the Chinese Government and solve the economic problems of the country.   Chinese leaderships, which is consisted by Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Liu Shaoqi, Chen Yun, and Chu Teh, consolidated power quickly moved apparently to gain the confidence of Chinese population.   In order to resolve the economic problems, especially food shortage and high food prices, they need to reestablish the social relationships in the countryside to gain their support and produce larger quantities of agricultural products.   Here enters a new concept – the restructuring of and implementations policies. [1] The Great Leap Forward was a new approach that was believed by the Chinese leaders to concurrently grow modern and traditional sectors – industrialization and agriculture. This new approach did not actually balanced the two sectors rather it only gives both of them the importance. More importance was still given to investment but unlike in Soviet model, the Great Leap Forward did not concentrate on few lines of investment. Making the investment lines for them was pushing the ceiling upward. On the other hand, agriculture was given an added importance. Under the new approach, labor was the idea to substitute capital. Likewise, another idea was to substitute surplus labor to capital formation. These two ideas were conceptually based on labor absorption and employment generating effects of industrialization. Under the Great Leap Forward, the solution imposed by the Chinese leaders was creation of communes. Communes are the state-feudalism form of solution thought by the leaders. According to Gabriel in 1998, the prevalence of the communist fundamental class process is reflected in communes. This happens because of the main reason that institutions are being created in communes. However, communes were not achieved. Collective appropriate and distribution of the surplus product made within the enterprise by the direct producers was .implied in the process. In effect, the workers had no power to control their collective surplus. Another reflection is that unlike in capitalism, workers are paid according to the number of hours and days they give their service. Therefore, capitalist institutions were not communes. Workers from the rural settings worked with obligations. The government was the one made the appointment of the commune management. It was during the later period of the Great Leap Forward when all the management is all from the urban. The government is the institution that controls the surplus from the communes. The feudal relationship reflected in this scenario between the government and the workers was the obligation of the workers to work in communes. The government was reflected as the feudal lord during the approach in the Great Leap Forward. From communism, CPC wanted to transform the country to socialism. Socialism is the social state between communism and capitalism. The exact meaning of Socialism was not understood in China. In fact, its meaning had liberty on different interpretations. For instance, the construction of socialism by the Soviet Union means rapid industrialization and strict centralization. On the other hand, leader Mao Zedong viewed socialism as intellectual foundation of the left-wing of the CPC.   The difference on the vision of Mao Zedong on socialism required the wholesale destruction of pre-revolutionary institutions. According to Mao, feudal lords and social structure had to be removed. For Mao, new political, cultural, and economic order must be created. In addition, Mao’s proposal requires new people’s army.   Accordingly, the proposal also requires the jurisdiction of the people’s court that must at all level. Lastly, the association of peasant must be all the way through the countryside and considering the workers, a well established council in industrial enterprises is also needed. The revolutionary transformation proposed by Mao was followed by their government. Lands from feudal lords were taken possession of, and farmers gained more control on their productive capacity. There was also a better market for economic and social exchange. The communist party officials aimed for every Chinese village to have its cadres. This was part of the agenda of the government to encourage greater cooperation among farmers. The party still feared the intervention of foreign countries. In effect of this approach, the central authorities provided eyes and ears within the countryside. Accordingly, the approach the government gave the rural producers available markets for their products. Those policies of the government were essential in achieving the goal of unifying China under a central authority. The land reform significantly reduced hunger and malnutrition in the countryside of China. This was proved after the implementation of the revolutionary transformation. There were no significant detrimental impacts of feudal lords after the lands were confiscated. Accordingly, rural farmers were able to put better use of their resources and its reproductive potential. Through elimination of feudal lands, the excess/surplus output was allowed to be invested. If they were not invested, they were used to finance the new social institutions and public goods. Consequently, life and work of rural direct producers were made easier. More so, increase in the living standard due to the revolutionary transformation was delivered and reached many rural direct producers and their families.   Incomes of the rural direct producers were improved by the significant improvement of the products they were producing. In general, nourishment, clothing, shelter and health in line with production were achieved by the rural community. In accordance to the revolutionary change, the expansion in the role of women in economic and political life was given importance and improvement. The state recognized both labor coming from males and females. For the state, both labors are valued in the national economy of China. In 1953, Mao proposed the Five-Year Economic Plan or the FYEP via the central plan. Under the plan, production quotas were expected but no quality standards were required. Consequently, the impact on demand was negative. According to Gabriel, â€Å"the motivation system created significant waste of inputs, unhappy consumers, unhappy wage laborers, and unhappy rural direct producers.† [2] In addition, the government bureaucrats were unhappy due to the failure of their plan. During the recognition of the failure of the plan, Mao called for a movement. The liberty in expressing unhappiness of the Chinese public was collectively joined through the â€Å"Hundred Flowers Movement†. The second Five-Year Economic Plan or the SFYEP were then taken advantage of Mao and his fraction. Literature Review Like other literature about China, literature about this theme on political economy of post 1949 China were mostly written by Western people.   Thus, it is more on Western perspective.   And like any historical data, literature about this topic is mostly descriptive. There are few that are analytical in nature and that could be found in the form essays.   And because it is more on descriptions and chronology of the events, it failed to give the deeper overview of the essence of the topic in history. Likewise, there are literatures that are either biased or shortened.   An example is the article about the Chinese Leader Mao Zedong.   Many writers wrote Mao who was accused of â€Å"Famine Death†. One-sided story was delivered and presented in the Chinese public. Only the problems that occurred during 1959 until 1961 were understood by them. The relationship between success and failures were not given. There was improvement in the life of the Chinese public that should be recognized along with socialism. The methodologies of the research conducted in proving Mao’s accusation of famine death were biased and shortened. Deaths due to natural disasters were accountable on what the people and other research claimed to be Mao’s failure on implementation of policy. Policy error during the Mao’s regime was what the common research claimed. According to Ball (2006), â€Å"millions of lives of Chinese people were saved.†[3] More or less 16.5 Million Chinese people were recorded in official Chinese sources. The release was in line with the ideological campaign against the inheriting the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution. The problem and issue on validity of the figures presented were questionable. There is anonymity on how the data were gathered. In addition, data and its preservation also seek for validity.   The sources and figures which claimed the statistical count for the death during the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution were released only twenty years after it happened. This figures and sources were obtained from the researches conducted by America, in which, as stated by Joseph Ball in his article, the American researchers increased the figure by 30 million – a combination of Chinese evidence with their own speculations from China’s censuses.’[4] Ball used statistics from China’s census and was able to gather the true figure. He also used other publications like Jung Chang and Jon Halliday’s book. In their book â€Å"Mao: the Unknown Story†, it was reported there that 38 million deaths from the Great Leap Forward was included in the total of 70 million Chinese people who were killed by Mao during his regime. The controversy regarding the origins of Chinese communism has not been completely resolved but nonetheless ended as the government strengthens the revolutionary struggle.   The generation of the specialists who followed and are much more trained as social scientists than historians, faced the challenge of documenting the Chinese communism development which, in many respects, is similar to its Soviet predecessors.[5] Those who are in contemporary Chinese studies field faced another controversy when the event of Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution which came along with communism perspective needed to be explained.   There are renewed interests and disagreements as well which aroused over the continuing importance of indigenous political traditions.  Ã‚   This was debated by the scholars who are trained with the growing field of political science, and attached with the modernization principles. [6] There are materials written guided by a singular theoretical framework to critique the Marxian theory that shapes the political and economic strategies of the Communist Party of China or CPC.   One of the most serious flaws of Chinese literature which attempts to explain the post 1049 China is illiteracy on Marxian theory of most Chinese who study the Chinese civilization, literature and language.  Ã‚   There is a failure in the knowledge of the differences between various forms of Marxian theory that have deployed and contested in China.   And there are materials which are used in the attempt to make up with these flaws.   These materials provide a critique of ‘modernist Marxism’ in the CPC style, and its rationale for maintaining monopoly control over China.   [7] Methodology Problems There is indeed a problem in research about this topic.   This is due to limited resources that are really reliable to contain facts.   And since it is written on descriptive and chronological manner, our analyses are limited to our understanding, our culture and environment. Going back to the example we gave about Mao, the flaws on the research conducted by the Western focused only on the excesses of the policy during Mao’s regime. These excesses on the policy were then exaggerated. In addition, the researchers did not grasp a thorough understanding on how some policies were developed and for what purpose. Therefore, the understanding on how Chinese people were benefitted by those policies was not understood and was not accounted in the research the western made. Evidences from the peasants were entirely different from the claim of the researches presented by the western. The statistics of the deaths during Dao’s regime were supported by the Chinese census. Only a pure and unbiased research can obtain the true figures and conclusion. However, there are scholars who are not Chinese, who take time to study China through observations, living with the Chinese people, interviewing them especially the rural people, and visit different cities and towns.   These ways of research and study are useful, although there is also a problem when it comes to language.   We know that language is a soul of the country’s culture.   There are parts of the language that change in meaning when you translate in other language.   In here, the flaw comes on the real meaning of the context. Moreover, there is a continuing effort in many scholars in changing the approach of writing and discussing about the history in general.   Their attempts hope to instill critical analysis and more explorations in different context of China. World peace has been developed through the endurance and persistence of several great men throughout history. They have struggled and fought against the social evils and human sufferings in order to materialize the moral values that they carry. Mahatma Gandhi is undeniably one of the most respected, influential men. Without the non-violent movement lead by Gandhi, the independence of India would’ve taken longer with more bloodshed and destruction to the country. Even after his death, his philosophy of non-violence inspired many prominent figures throughout the world. â€Å"Cleanliness is next to godliness†. We can keep our city clean only if the people of our city think like us. Without public cooperation we cannot achieve anything. So first to keep our city clean there should be a huge awareness to the public via various mass media and news papers. Also the government should take major role in conducting awareness programs to public and also introduce new rules if necessary. Only our thinking does not make our city clean. KEEPING OUR CITY CLEAN IS EVERY CITIZEN’S DUTY. FIRST WE SHOULD LOVE OUR COUNTRY. WE SING SONGS PRAISING BHARATH MATHA AND SO ON BUT WE NEVER THINK TWICE TO THROW DIRT ANYWHERE THAT SUITS US. STRICT LAW SHOULD BE ENFORCED LIKE THE ONE IN SINGAPORE WHO LITTER. THIS WAY FINE ALSO CAN BE COLECTED WHICH IN TURN CAN BE USED FOR DEV PURPOSES.IN A DMOCRATIC COUNTRY LIKE OURS PEOPLE TAKE FOR GRANTED EVERYTHING AND IF ONE TRIES TO EDUCATE ABOUT THIS ONE MAY NOT TAKE IT IN THE RIGHT SPIRIT. INFACT THEY FEEL WE ARE TOO INTERFERING. HENCE BETTER TO ENFORCE FINE. Its our du ty to keep our city clean because it represent that which types of people live in that city. For make city clean following steps is important – 1. Educate the people about it. 2. Do not use plastic bag. 3. Do not through garbage in the open area. 4. Grow plants. 5. Use solar energy because it does not produce residue Young student like me must start to do something worth-remembering and that is to keep the world clean and green. I heard a question that is raised, â€Å"how can you do that†? I must say, â€Å"we will work together to start this†. Some points I want to emphasize are the following: First, let’s keep the world clean and green by recycling and cleaning the world. This point includes different kinds of pollution from massive factories and smoking pollution that would kill us because of lung cancer. No tobacco, no pollution. We must clean every sort of pollutions and to protect one another. We are blessed with amazing hospitality awards; we are the best in food. We have every type of culture and customs, we enjoy the secular nature, we say we are the golden bird but still from our roads to our green belts to public bathrooms to our every outer surrounding, we lack perfection, we lack comfort, we lack amenities, we lack beauty and we never feel proud in walking on the streets. We have departments who have the authority of maintaining everything, we have good team of people who can work and give tidy and inviting atmosphere, we have millions of skilled and unskilled labor of agriculture and masonry knowledge but still our surroundings and our outer atmosphere is untidy and shameful. We often hate this, we often complain about this but still nothing is happening. We don’t know what should we do in order to change things as revolting on the streets is not a solution. Many of us have made some private welfare associations of our respective sector and we often collect money as donation and invest it on our surrounding parks and green belt. This attempt is good and encouraging but most of the houses do not contribute in this as they have a debatable point and that is when we are paying taxes then why we have to waste our money on another expense which is the government duty not the private affair. Our broken roads are the black spot on the high rise buildings, our sewage and drainage systems are either semi blocked or completely blocked as there is no maintenance. Roads in monsoon become a dirty lake of sewage waste and water. We are used to this ugly mess. We only take care of the place where  we live. All the government buildings and other constructions like bridges, barricade, pedestrian pathways, public bathrooms and other buildings which are used by government and public are not taken care of as we think its government building so why should we care? Every year millions of unauthorized posters and advertisements ruin the beauty of the buildings made by the government. These unauthorized advertisements have no limit and there is no one to stop the people who do this immature and punishable offence. Even young political leaders and well established political parties enjoy the facility of unauthorized advertising. They are equally responsible in running the architecture and other surroundings. Public bathrooms made by the government are obviously very less in number and there condition is so pathetic that I cannot even show there images to you as they can even make you vomit. There are millions of things which make every Indian feel guilty and the infrastructure and maintenance of this exotic country is at zero scale. The ministers are not concerned in improving the nation and we will again never feel proud in walking on the streets as India will remain untidy. Feminism is a movement that I have never really claimed myself to be a part. I have nothing against those who want to stand for what they believe in, but I think there’s a way it should be done. Feminism is something that I have questioned a lot and have looked into. I am completely for women feeling empowered; however, I find many things that I disagree with when it comes to the feminist movement. I’ve listed five of them: 1. Feminists tend to paint the picture like men are the only problem. It seems as if it s easier to put the blame on men. Why do we have to bash men who are doing their jobs? As women, we find it disrespectful when men use derogatory terms towards us; however, it’s okay for women to use the same derogatory terms. In my opinion, it’s not okay. Movie Subplot The Monuments Men Essay In the film, The Monuments Men, there is a scene in which James (Matt Damon), who is part of the Monuments Men, talks to a beautiful French woman named Claire Simone who is portrayed by Cate Blanchett. James talks to Claire about the portraits and paintings that were stolen by Nazi Germany. James is worried because he believes that the stolen arts will be lost forever and the history that the art provides for each country will disappear, and therefore he needs Claire assistance to retrieve the stolen arts. The scene that will be focused on in this assignment is when James is kindly talking to Claire, but Claire answers James in an inappropriate manner by saying â€Å"would you stop speaking in French, whatever language you are speaking. † James, however, answer to Claire in a professional way and did not become enraged or grabbed Claire out of anger. Would this scene be different if Claire Simone were a man? Would this scene still turn out the same? Typically, the stereotypical society view females as emotional and fragile. When there is a disagreement between male and female, usually it is the male who tries not to harm women emotionally, so at least they try not to dominate the conversation. If Claire Simone were a man, James could have argued with her, and become enraged due to the disrespectful answer she gave to James. Because Claire Simone would be a man instead of a woman, James would try to act manly to show between them who is the alpha male, so he would respond â€Å"Don’t be disrespectful, or you will be in trouble. James will not stand for the impoliteness, because if he allows Claire to disrespect him, his identity as a man will be jeopardized and his manhood will vanish and fade. Taking this into account, James’s masculinity is not challenged by Claire Simone in the original scene because Claire is a female. However, if Claire’s gender is changed to male, James would act manly because his masculinity is being challenged by another male. Claire is the only female, so J ames would have never started an argument with her and fight her physically, because men believe they are stronger than females physically, emotionally and mentally. There is no point for James to debate with Claire because his ideals and masculinity are not being undermined. James knows males are the dominant gender, so he will enjoy his benefits as the dominant gender and act according to his identity as a man. The new scene will be serious, which will emphasize the fact that Claire (as a man) and James will try to challenge each other, to see who can maintain their dominance as men and keep their manhood status. Basically, James would not act calm, but he will become aggressive and won’t express any type of fear or pain towards the male.
